The Grace Lodge bungalow is timber framed with traditional roof and wall, in Mengge Village on Simbo Island. Simbo Island is made up of 3 truncated volcanic centres which now form crater lakes, hot springs and vent sulphur. The megapode bird nests on the hillside of Ove crater. Visitors enjoy a great opportunity experiencing local daily life and culture with the Simbo people living in small village centres. The slow pace of life and interesting daily tasks to gather food and maintain shelter creates a fascinating holiday.
Grace Lodge is located on the north-western side of Simbo Island, 27 km from Gizo. The trip takes approximately 1 and half hours boat ride from Gizo, and is dependant on the weather. Delays may occur at times due to the sea crossing. Mengge has a small jetty for dry landing.
Hotel Address: Mengge Village, Simbo Island
From Honiara, visitors to Simbo Island travel by light plane (1hour by Dash 8) to Nusatupe Airfield which services Gizo on the western end of the New Georgia group of islands. Visitors should be prepared for the fact that Gizo is a small airstrip on an island with only a few buildings on the edge.
On arrival at Nusatupe Airfield , Grace Lodge staff pick up their guests with an open 23 foot outboard engine powered canoe - standard transport in the area. The trip takes about 1 and a half hours across open water. Be prepared for the chance of getting wet from spray on the way to the island! We suggest carrying a spray jacket for boat crossings. Cost is $1600 SBD return plus fuel ( up to 4 guests)
If guests are arriving from Honiara by boat in Gizo, Grace Lodge staff will collect you from the Government wharf in Gizo town.
An alternative for the trip from Gizo to Simbo is a public boat ( open boat with 40hp) travelling Monday, Wednesday and Friday departing Gizo 1:30pm and costs $220 per person return. Return is usually early mornings. They will drop you directly at Mengge Village, only 2 minutes stroll from Grace Lodge. For travel days other than Monday and Friday, there may be a surcharge or fuel cost depending on numbers travelling.
