On the small island of Nusatupe, accessible by an 8-minute boat ride from Gizo town, you will be escorted to WorldFish to commence your tour of their Western Province Research Facility.
Depending on the current projects, a guide will accompany you as you tour through the research station with aquaculture tanks containing marine fish, clams or corals. During the tour your guide will explain the research work that WorldFish does and talk about current projects and activities.
After your dry tour you can get wet on a self-guided snorkel! Get up close and personal with the 1000’s of giant clams and some of the best coral reef snorkelling in the Gizo area. You are likely to see six different species of giant clam. Feel free to have a close look at the shape of the shell and the different colours of the mantle. Most of them these clams are Tridacna derasa or the ‘true giant clam’ Tridacna gigas*.
Nusa Tupe Island is surrounded by reefs, which have healthy marine life, so watch out for hundreds of species of tropical fish and crustaceans, huge green turtles, manta rays, sting rays and even dugongs!
* It is important that you don’t disturb the clams by touching them.
